In the sixth season of USA's Psych, consultant Shawn
(James Roday) and detective Jules (Maggie Lawson) come clean
about their relationship, but it doesn't change the tone in any
way, since Shawn remains as much of a goofball as ever (her
strained relationship with her her, played by William Shatner,
however, lends the usually sunny character a darker dimension).
Initially uncomfortable with the situation, Gus (Dulé Hill) and
Lassie (Timothy Omundson) enjoy a little romance of their
own--the episode in which the two go clubbing with Henry (Corbin
Bernsen) represents one of the series' funniest.
All the while, the cases keep coming, and the show is at its
best when it keeps things light, as in the episodes that draw
from comic books ("The Amazing Psych-Man & Tap-Man, Issue #2"),
horror movies ("Heeeeere's Lassy"), and The Hangover ("Last Night
Gus"). In the latter, the guys, including Woody, the coroner
(recurring guest star Kurt Fuller, most recently seen in Woody
Allen's Midnight in Paris), retrace their steps after someone
spikes their drinks. Because they don't remember anything from
the night before, they must interpret strange clues, like
Lassie's black eye, Shawn's unfamiliar shoes, and Woody's powdery
face (apparently, he licked a shelf full of donuts). Psych also
has fun with the casting by hiring Kristy Swanson (Buffy the
Vampire Slayer) and Corey Feldman (The Lost Boys) for a
vampire-themed installment ("This Episode Sucks"). That said, not
everything works, like the Skype episode ("Let's Doo-Wop It
Again") and the return of Cary Elwes's master thief Despereaux,
who isn't as entertaining as intended, but those are minor
quibbles when everything else works so well. The extensive
special features offer deleted and extended scenes, gag reels,
video introductions, and audio commentaries with the entire cast.
