BEDKNOBS AND BROOMSICKS was made in the early 70's and is one of those Disney films that speaks to the little kid in us all. Directed by veteran Disney director Robert Stevenson (Mary Pippins, The Love Bug, The Darn Cat ) and starring the incomparable Angela Landsbury (Murder She Wrote, Mame - on Broadway, The Last Unicorn 2004) as Miss Elglentine Price the apprentice witch of the Professor Emiliace Brown School Of Witchcraft - played none other by veteran Disney character performer/actor David Tomlinson (Tom Jones, The Love Bug, Made In Heaven). There is even a great performance in a small role as a priest by Roddy McDowell (Planet Of The Apes, Cleopatra, Fright Night) The story is set in the early days of the German attack on the European border. Towns were broken down, families were separated and displaced and many people had to go to war and leave their children behind. One set of these children were orphaned with Miss Price. Accidentally discovering her secret they convince her to go on her quest to find the one last spell that will save England from attack. There is magic, music and lot of special effects that make this movie colorful and enticing to watch. Back in the days when most special effects were real and done "in cameras" - meaning on the set - this film has a lot to be proud of. The songs are fantastic and this FULLY RESTORED DVD is the best it has to offer. Included the full versions of songs like Portabello Road and reinserted songs like No One To Come Home To has made this version a treasure to own. Other fantastic numbers like Substitutiary Locomotion and Under The Briny Sea are fantastic and hitting home for kids is the Academy Award Nominated song Your At The Age Of Not Believing. Originally rushed out and thought to be too long - this version contains the full - over two hours - theatrical release as it was originally intended. The DVD extras include a documentary retrospective with co-host Angela Landsbury on the Sherman Brothers (Mary Poppins, ) themselves and a look at some of the actual recording sessions with David Tomlinson. Also a reconstructed seen of a song that was recorded by Angela but all the actual film footage was lost so it could not make it into its restoration version. Lots of extra features too including two shorts. You'll love this DVD if you are a Disney fan ! Lot's of Fun!...

I've always loved this movie. The seller got it right to me without issue.

Set in a tiny village in the South of England in 1940, "Bedknobs and Broomsticks" is a joyful, exciting, laugh-out-loud romp -- a blend of animation and live action in the style of "Mary Poppins", which had bee released only a few years earlier. In fact, it. was Poppins' Oscar-Winning Songwriters, Richard M. and Robert B. Sherman, we can thank for "Bedknobs and Broomsticks", as many of the the delightful songs in the film were leftover from "Mary Poppins". As with most of the Disney Theatrical Releases of the mid-sixties to the early seventies, we get top-notch story, A List Vocal - and-or Acting talent, A List Animation Department, and, the defining factor -- the Sing-a-long classics created by the genius of the Sherman Brothers (both were WW2 Veterans- one or both of the brothers, in fact, was with the US Forces who liberated the Death Camps - and though this may be apocryphal, it is said that the experience so affected them, that the the Sherman Brothers devoted the rest of their lives to making people happy through music -- I believe this to be true), to whom generations owe so many happy moments. The fact that the film is set on the eve of World War 2 - In fact, Germany has already invaded Poland and the bombing campaign of London has begun, Britain stands alone against the Axis, and the presence of both the "The Old Home Guard" consisting of World War 1 Veterans, and the young soldiers from the corners of the British Empire who pour into London for an exuberant multicultural dance number in the barrow-filled market of Portobello Road add a touch of majesty and historical context to the delightful bit-o-witchcraft that utilizes terrific special effects and constant humor that makes "Bedknobs" a winner for kids of all ages. This 60 year old kid who first saw the movie in London at age 6, only 30 years after these events took place, just watched it again in 2025, sang all the songs, laughed throughout, and wiped away a tear of pride at the end.

It's a classic, HAD to get it!!

One of my favorite wholesome movies for a family fantasy romp! A witch in training wants to do her part for the British War effort in WWII. Children and a prestidigitating magic teacher spice up her efforts.

Película infantil y familiar Disney, se ve francamente bien, pero el doblaje es latino, concretamente mejicano, si hay subtítulos en español.

Even though this movies was an old fashioned slow moving Disney family flick, it was typical Disney entertainment for the time. Just as delightful as I remembered it to be as a small child. The shipper was a little slow (not the fault of the seller), but the dvd arrived in perfect condition, and the DVD played flawlessly. It was worth the wait! I would definitely use this seller again.

oder sollte ich sagen: Hexenhaft? ;-) Die folgende Bewertung bezieht sich auf die englische Import-DVD. Dieser Film zählte schon in meiner Kindheit zu meinen Lieblingsfilmen und obwohl ich damals nur die Gelegenheit hatte ihn einen Tag leihweise zu bekommen hat er solch einen bleibenden Eindruck hinterlassen. Wie schon in einer Bewertung erwähnt ist er sicherlich für die Kleinsten der Kleinen zu anstrengend, da zumindest die Laufzeit dieser Original-Fassung inklusive Vor- und Abspann sage und schreibe 133 Minuten beträgt. Der UK-Import beinhaltet nämlich anlässlich des 25. Jubiläums (damals 1996) die beinahe ungeschnittene Fassung (z. B. mit Ausnahme eines einzigen Musikstückes namens "A Step In The Right Direction" dessen Szene nicht mehr auffindbar war und das man sich bei den Extras der DVD in Verbindung mit gezeigten Fotos einzeln anhören kann) Angeblich soll selbst die englische Fassung damals um eine knappe halbe Stunde gekürzt gewesen sein, da der Film aus ungenannten Gründen unter zwei Stunden laufen sollte. Wer sich die UK-Fassung zulegt, darf sich nicht von der auf der Rückseite der DVD angegebenen Laufzeit von 94 Minuten abschrecken lassen, denn dies ist lediglich ein Fehler. Der Film selbst ist amüsant, blühend fantasievoll und unterhaltsam für die ganze Familie. Die Tricks sind beeindruckend, vor allem die Szenen, in denen die Protagonisten in ein Zeichentrick-Land reisen und die Szenen mit den sich durch Hexerei bewegenden Gegenständen, wobei der Höhepunkt sicherlich die lebendig gezauberten Ritterrüstungen sind, die eine aberwitzige Schlacht gegen die Nazis führen. (Unblutig und ohne Tote) Zum Inhalt wurde, soweit ich das überflogen habe, bisher noch nicht so viel gesagt: Die Geschichte spielt im zweiten Weltkrieg. Es handelt sich um eine angehende Hexe, die zunächst widerwillig drei Waisenkinder bei sich aufnimmt, und der noch ein letzter Spruch fehlt, mit dem sie Gegenstände ins Leben rufen kann: "Substitutiary Locomotion" und der ihre Ausbildung abschließt. Die Suche nach diesem Spruch, der sich in einem uralten Buch befindet, wird zu einer wahren, abenteuerlichen und bunten Odyssee für die Hexe, ihre drei Schützlinge und bald auch dem Professor des "College Of Witchcraft" der der Hexe die benötigten Sprüche per Post übermittelt, zunächst aber selbst nicht an deren Wirkung glaubt. Und mag ich mit meiner Meinung auch zu der Minderheit gehören - ich finde Bedknobs and Broomsticks definitiv besser als Mary Poppins. (Wer allerdings glaubt die Mischung aus Trick- und Realfilm sei zu der damaligen Zeit - 1971 - etwas Außergewöhnliches gewesen irrt sich. Ebenso aus dem Hause Disney gab es bereits 1945 einen Film mit dem Titel "Die drei Caballeros") Wie auch immer, wer mit der englischen Sprache, die in diesem Film auch für Anfänger vermutlich nicht besonders schwer ist, zurecht kommt, sollte sich auf jeden Fall diesen UK-Import zulegen. Ich kann mir nicht vorstellen, welche Szenen in der geschnittenen Fassung fehlen sollen, ohne, dass die Lücken zu Verständnis- oder gar Logik-Problemen führen. Mir fallen da als Beispiel höchstens die Tanzszenen auf der Portobello-Road ein, welche zugegeben ziemlich lang sind, wobei wiederum das Lied "Portobello Road" für mich das melodisch eingängigste und schönste ist, obwohl es ein moll-Stück ist. Insgesamt vergehen die über zwei Stunden wie im Fluge.
